Roanoke City Schools

It's A Great Day to be a Handley Tiger!

Superintendent's Message

  • “Roanoke…Together… Educating with Excellence, Challenging for Success, Inspiring Learners for Life.”  This mission of Roanoke City Schools is the challenge our staff, students,  and community are meeting each day and the reason we have such an outstanding system.

We strongly believe keeping students as our top priority in every decision we make is how we best fulfill our mission in Roanoke City Schools. We enjoy a culturally diverse student body with lofty dreams for their futures. We believe we can help all students fulfill their individual goals by working collaboratively. Our community has high expectations for its school system and offers tremendous support to assist the system in helping every child experience success. The parents of Roanoke City Schools entrust us with their most valuable possession each day, their child. Our dedicated and caring staff accept the challenge of high expectations and understand the tremendous opportunity we have to make a difference in the lives of their children by helping them fulfill their dreams.

We believe educating a child successfully is not possible with a “one size fits all” approach. Our faculty and staff work collaboratively with parents and students to get to know each child as an individual and to ensure each child has opportunities to grow and excel in academics, fine arts, athletics, scholastic competitions, and a myriad of other extracurricular activities.

A former class Salutatorian from Handley High School remarked in her graduation address, "Handley Family is not a slogan on a t-shirt, but rather who we are." This climate and culture is built on collaboration, caring, and most of all,  love for each other and these characteristics are what sets us apart from others.

Thank you for your interest in Roanoke City Schools. Please contact me if you would like more information about our outstanding school system.

"It's A Great Day To Be A Handley Tiger!"
